Supervision and Staff Appraisal

Staff Supervision – Getting the most out of it
It is a regulatory requirement for care settings to arrange for their staff team members to have regular formal supervision sessions with their line manager. These should be at 2 monthly intervals in the case of care homes and 3 monthly intervals in the case of domiciliary care agencies. In addition people carrying out the supervision sessions should be suitably trained an experienced to carry out these tasks.

Unfortunately many care settings regard staff supervision as something that has to be done to meet the regulatory requirements, as a consequence of this they do not place enough importance on planning and conducting supervision sessions. In doing do they miss out on the opportunity to get the most out of supervision.

“Effective supervision is the care setting managers’ most important tool. “

A brave statement – or a wise one?

Staff supervision if planned and conducted effectively can provide evidence of compliance with many of the Regulations relating to the Care Standards Act 2000. For example Reg 21 – Staff views as to the  conduct of the service , can be evidenced by records of staff supervision sessions – purely by asking staff members what they think of the service,  recording their responses and acting on any issues arising. There are many more regulatory requirements which can be met and/or evidenced by effective supervision.

In addition effective staff supervision has some other vital benefits; reducing sickness absence, avoidance of employment legislation difficulties, ensuring compliance with health & safety legislation and many more.

Social Care Consultants Ltd have devised a half day training course to equip managers and their staff who carry out supervisions on colleagues with the skills and knowledge to do so effectively – and get the most of  it for their organisation, the staff team and ultimately for service users. This course can be delivered on an in-house basis for an individual care setting, or on an open basis for delegates from a number of care settings. The course is delivered by an experienced care practitioner with first hand day to day experience of running a care setting. The course provides forms for use by delegates to carry out supervision in their own care settings, a full set of course notes and a certificate of attendance.
